CHEHALIS – In recovery mode, hundreds of local residents, volunteers and Lewis County officials are at work  Monday as flood waters recede. Dozens of people have evacuated to a shelter located at the Southwest Washington Fairgrounds in Chehalis. Lewis County Emergency Management Deputy Director Ross McDowell says they are now assessing damages so that state and federal financial assistance can be accessed. McDowell says there will be related issues to deal with for several weeks. Floodwaters are unhealthy and those affected by the flood are warned not to go into flood impacted homes and businesses without first being protected from the chemicals and sewage that may be in the water. Access answers to frequently asked questions on the Lewis County website, lewiscountywa.gov. Coordinating volunteers for clean-up and other recovery efforts is the United Way of Lewis County. If you’re wanting to volunteer call the United Way at 360-748-8100. Highway 12 over White Pass continues to be closed to traffic, until at least late Monday afternoon, according to the State Department of Transportation. The state says there is a substantial amount of snow and debris from trees and rocks that need to be removed. There had been a concern for avalanche which along the highway has subsided. Dallas Glass, an avalanche expert with the NW Avalanche Center says the backcountry remains unstable. Highway 12 is closed east of Packwood near the junction with highway 410.
