‘COACH’ REFLECTS ON CAREER AS CENTRALIA BASKETBALL TIPS OFF NEW SEASON

CENTRALIA – Coming off a 3-8 season a year ago, the Centralia Tigers boys basketball team takes to the court for the first time for the 2021-2022 season Tuesday night. You’ll hear the bouncing ball and screeching tennis shoes worn by the players as they race up and down Ron Brown Court inside Centralia High School. For 58 years until his retirement “Coach” Brown was involved in teaching the kids the game of football, baseball and basketball. 56 years as head coach of the high school team. We recently sat down with “Coach” to get his perspective on the beginning of the new season. How did he motivate the players like he did to 722 career wins and two state championships? Brown said, “I think they (players) bought into Centralia being a special place to play. You’re just consistent with your players and have high expectations from them, and have fun with them.” Players honed their skills through Coaches’ Saturday youth basketball program, where players taught the next generation how to play the game as a Tiger, to believe in practice and execution of well devised plays. In preparation for opening night of the season, Brown told us that he kept meticulous statistics on each team in the league, his players and opponent players to get ready for the new season. “You have to be consistent and you have to have a plan”, says Brown. “Coach” added, “We were well prepared for almost anything that was thrown at us, and we executed, executed, executed.” “Coach”, with the assistance of players Jared Stewart and Chris Thomas has written a new book, titled “History of Centralia Basketball, the Ron Brown Era.” It covers much of Brown’s coaching career which spanned from 1961-2018. The book is currently at the publisher. You can pre-order it on line at www.talltigers.com. All proceeds go to the Centralia Athletics Activities Facilities Foundation in support of the high school boys basketball program. As for Tuesday night’s game when the Tigers host Orting at 7:00pm, “Coach” will be rooting the team on from his bleacher seat at Ron Brown Court. Photo: courtesy The Chronicle.
