WINLOCK – A man is dead after reportedly assaulting a woman at a Winlock home and barricading himself inside the residence. Lewis County Sheriff’s Detectives responded to a home in the 100 block Of Marsyla Heights Drive after receiving a 9-1-1 call Thursday night. Sheriff’s deputies had received a report that a 58 year old suspect had assaulted a 72 year old family member residing in the same home. Deputies responded and interviewed the female victim. They were advised after the victim was physically assaulted.  Investigators learned that  the suspect discharged a handgun, and at one point pointed the handgun at the victim. The victim advised the suspect pulled the trigger, but the handgun did not discharge. Over the next several hours, the deputies, as well as officers from the Winlock Police Department, attempted to engage the suspect in conversation and have him exit the home. When all attempts failed, a request was made to the Washington State Patrol SWAT Team to respond. Upon their arrival, numerous attempts to gain compliance from the suspect were again made, and eventually officers entered the home and were able to determine that the suspect was deceased. The Lewis County Coroner has positively identified the individual involved in the incident  as 58-year old Michael Petit of Winlock. The cause of death was a self inflicted shotgun wound to the head.
